PRESIDENT Marcos Jr. has suspended classes in public schools at all levels and work in government offices in Metro Manila and Bulacan on August 25 to give way to the opening of the FIBA Basketball World Cup at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.
Malacanang released yesterday a copy of Memorandum Circular No. 27 signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, on the authority of the President, last August 15 stating the suspension aims to help in ensuring the safe, orderly, and successful conduct of the opening ceremonies.
Marcos will grace the rites as the special guest and will also do the ceremonial tip-off between the Philippines and the Dominican Republic.
The World Cup, being held for the first time in the country since 1978, is being funded by the government to the tune of P1 billion.
It is part of the government’s commitment towards wider involvement and participation in sports promotion and development.
Malacanang said government agencies involved in the delivery of basic and health services, disasters and calamities preparedness and response, and the performance of other vital services shall continue with their operations.
Suspension of classes in private schools and work for private companies have been left to the discretion of their respective heads.
August 25 falls on a Friday and precedes a long weekend as the country commemorates National Heroes Day on August 28. The country observes the non-working holiday every last Monday of August.
