THE Department of Education yesterday announced that in-person classes in all public schools nationwide will be suspended today, Monday, in favor of the distance learning mode of education.

DepEd Undersecretary and spokesman Michael Poa said the suspension was not due to the extreme weather conditions that have led more than 5, 200 schools nationwide to suspend face-to-face classes.

“In order to allow learners to complete pending assignments, projects and other requirements, all public schools nationwide shall implement asynchronous classes/distance learning on Monday, April 8, 2024,” the DepEd said in an advisory late yesterday afternoon.

“Likewise, teaching and non-teaching personnel in all public schools shall not be required to report to their stations,” it added.

There are more than 47,000 public schools in the country from preschool to senior high school.

Private schools are not covered by the suspension but the DepEd said “they shall have the option to implement the same.”

Poa said teachers and students will return to schools on Thursday, April 11, and April 12, except schools that have canceled their in-person classes due to the extreme heat.

Poa said the suspension has nothing to do with the extreme heat, adding different situations around the country do not warrant the blanket suspension of classes.

“It is the best time for learners to use the time to complete pending matters that they need to complete,” he added.
