THE suspension of face-to-face classes due to Taal volcano’s sudden emission of sulfur dioxide gas this week affected more than 3.5 million learners in Calabarzon, the National Capital Region and Mimaropa, the Department of Education said yesterday.
Data provided by DepEd showed that 2. 685 schools in 21 school divisions in Calabarzon suspended in-person learning last August 19, affecting 2,850,095 learners.
As of yesterday, the 21 schools have yet to return to face-to-face classes.
In Metro Manila, 254 schools in five divisions with 730,336 learners suspended in-person learning last August 19. The DepEd said regular classes resumed a day after.
In Mimaropa, 28 schools with 5,922 learners also suspended in-person learning last August 19 and classes resumed only yesterday.
Overall, the data showed that 2,967 schools in 27 divisions in the three regions were affected by the suspension involving 3,586,353 students.
Last Monday, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara authorized affected schools in Calabarzon and the NCR to suspend in-person classes in the absence of an official announcement from the local government units.
