ASIDE from dengue cases, the Department of Health (DOH) yesterday said that chikungunya cases are also on the rise in the country.
Based on its latest surveillance report, the DOH reported 149 cases of the vector-borne disease from January 1 until June 11, which is 263 percent higher than the 41 cases during the same period last year.
Calabarzon has the highest number of chikungunya cases with 49, followed by Central Visayas with 38 cases and Davao Region with 25 cases.
The DOH data also showed that the biggest jump in chikungunya cases was seen in Calabarzon at 49 this year from only 1 last year (4,800%).
Completing the top 3 regions are the Western Visayas (1 to 15) at 1,400 percent, and Central Visayas (3 to 38) at 1,167 percent.
Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes. It causes fever and severe joint pain.
