NEW coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in the Philippines breached the grim milestone of over 550,000 yesterday as the Department of Health reported 1,685 more infections while the number of fatalities reached 11,517.
In its latest bulletin, the DOH said the total number of infections in the country now total 550,860 even as two more patients succumbed to the deadly virus.
There were 14 more recoveries, raising the number of survivors to 511,755. The DOH said this means that 92.9 percent of patients had recovered.
But there were 27,588 active cases, of which 86.6 percent are mild cases, 6.9 percent asymptomatic cases, 2.8 percent critical cases, 2.8 percent severe cases, and 0.86 percent moderate cases.
A Manila police has died of COVID-19, bringing to 31 the number of police personnel dying from the deadly virus.
The cop died at around 11:08 a.m. Sunday at a hospital in Manila where he was confined since January 30 when he exhibited symptoms of the deadly virus. He tested positive the next day.
The policeman was a 50-year-old sergeant assigned with the Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management of the Manila Police District and a resident of Sta. Cruz, Manila.
The PNP also reported that 101 more cops had contracted the virus, bringing the total number of infection in the police force to 10,782, with 10,270 having recovered and active cases still at 481. — With Victor Reyes
