FOUR months before the October 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE), the advocacy arm of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines is calling for the holding of a cleaner electoral process.
In a statement for the 125th Independence Day celebration, Caritas Philippines called for a cleaner conduct of the elections, saying it serves as the foundation of having genuine democracy.
“On this momentous occasion of our 125th Independence Day, Caritas Philippines strongly advocates for a cleaner and more transparent election process,” said Caritas Philippines President Bishop Colin Bagaforo.
“We believe that genuine democracy is built on the foundations of integrity and social responsibility,” he added.
The prelate said such a responsibility primarily lies in the hands of the government being the safeguards of Philippine democracy.
“It is essential for the government to take necessary measures to guarantee transparency, accountability, and integrity throughout the elections,” said Bagaforo.
In his own Independence Day message, Commission on Elections (Comelec) Chairman George Garcia called on all poll personnel to do their part in ensuring the true voice of the people comes out during every election.
He said that all Comelec employees play a vital role in upholding the principles of democracy, through fair elections.
“The 125th anniversary of Philippine independence is not just a time for celebration but also serves as a call to action. It is a reminder that the responsibility to shape our nation’s destiny rests upon our shoulders,” he said.
“Our work at the Comelec is crucial in shaping the destiny of our nation, and we must continue to discharge our responsibilities with the utmost professionalism, dedication, and integrity,” added Garcia.
The next BSKE is set to be held on October 30, 2023.
