“CARINA” intensified into a typhoon yesterday but remained far from the Philippine landmass, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

Three areas have been placed by PAGASA under wind signal No. 1 — Batanes, the eastern portion of mainland Cagayan including the eastern portion of Babuyan Islands, and the northeastern portion of Isabela.

“Minimal to minor impacts due to strong winds may be experienced within any of the localities where Wind Signal No. 1 is hoisted,” PAGASA said in a bulletin issued at 5 p.m. yesterday.

As of 4 p.m. yesterday, Carina was some 420 km east of Tuguegarao City in Cagayan.

It was packing maximum sustained winds of 120 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 150 kph, and moving north northeastward slowly.

Carina developed into a tropical depression, from low pressure area, last Friday. It intensified into a severe tropical storm on Sunday night and to a typhoon yesterday afternoon.

PAGASA said Carina is forecast to move generally north northeastward until today while gradually accelerating before turning northwestward.

“On the track forecast, Carina will remain far from the Philippine landmass and exit the Philippine area rf Responsibility (PAR) on Wednesday evening or Thursday early morning,” said PAGASA.

“The track forecast also shows CARINA passing near or over the southern islands of the Ryukyu archipelago prior to leaving the PAR region and passing close to northern Taiwan after exiting the PAR,” added PAGASA.

On Thursday, it will move over the East China Sea and head towards southeastern China.

“Carina is forecast to steadily intensify over the next four days due to favorable environment. Rapid intensification within the forecast period is likely,” added PAGASA.
