TWO months since his appointment was announced, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle is now headed to the Vatican to assume his new post as Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.

In a message posted at the Facebook page of the Archdiocese of Manila, Tagle announced his departure from the Philippines on Sunday night.

“Tonight, I say goodbye. Work starts for me this week at the Congregation,” said Tagle, who was appointed by Pope Francis to his new post in December 2019.

This was affirmed by the Archdiocese of Manila in a separate post.

“At 10 pm, 9 February 2020, His Eminence Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle has left Manila for Rome to take on his new mission at the Vatican,” said the Manila Archdiocese.

Tagle thanked the entire Archdiocese of Manila for being with him since 2011.

“It was an honor and blessing to have known you and have collaborated with you. I will always treasure my time with you,” he said.

Less than 24 hours after Tagle left for the Vatican, Pope Francis appointed Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo as the Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Manila.

“The Holy Father Pope Francis has appointed His Excellency Bishop Broderick S. Pabillo as the Apostolic Administrator of the Archdiocese of Manila,” the archdiocese office said in a Facebook post.

With his appointment, Pabillo will temporarily oversee the affairs of the archdiocese until a new bishop is appointed by the Pope.

The Vatican usually appoints an apostolic administrator to temporarily head a diocese when it becomes vacant.
