POPE Francis yesterday appointed Cardinal Jose Advincula as archbishop of Manila in place of Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle who has been given a post at the Vatican.
Advincula, currently archbishop of Capiz, becomes the 33rd head of the oldest diocese in the Philippines.
A report of the CBCP News, the official news agency of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, said the appointment was announced in Rome at noon (7 p.m. in Manila).
Advincula, who is turning 68 on March 30, will succeed Tagle who was appointed by Pope Francis as Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples in February 2020.
Before Advincula’s appointment, Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo has been serving as apostolic administrator of the Archbishop of Manila.
Advincula was born in Dumalag, Capiz.
He was ordained priest for the Capiz archdiocese in 1976.
In 2001, he was appointed bishop of San Carlos and served there for 10 years.
He has been serving as the archbishop of Capiz since January 2012.
In October 2020, Advincula and 12 others were appointed by Pope Francis as new cardinals of the Catholic Church.
He is the one of four living Filipino cardinals, along with Tagle, Orlando Quevedo, and Gaudencio Rosales.
However, only Advincula and Tagle are still active and are eligible to take part in a papal conclave when the time comes to elect a new pope.
