THE Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) on Wednesday said cult leader Ruben Ecleo Jr. has been transferred to the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City.
BuCor spokesman Gabriel Chaclag said Ecleo was transferred to the NBP from Camp Bagong Diwa in Taguig City, as ordered by Sandiganbayan 1st Division in Quezon City to service the sentence imposed on him.
“He will be in an isolation area and will be observed by the RDC medical staff for a period of time following quarantine procedures,” he also said.
Ecleo, 60, a former congressman representing Dinagat Islands, was captured in Pampanga on July 30 by the National Capital Regional Police Office after nine years in hiding.
Ecleo was the country’s No. 1 most wanted person with P2-million reward money for his capture.
In 2006, he was sentenced to 31 years in jail after being convicted of three counts of graft over anomalous construction deals when he was a mayor of San Jose, Surigao del Norte from 1991 to 1994. He was also sentenced by the Cebu City Regional Trial Court to life imprisonment for killing his wife, Alona Bacolod-Ecleo, in their home in 2002.
