AMID uncertainties, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) is looking to complete the procurement projects related to the December 2022 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) by next month.

In a radio interview, acting Elections spokesman John Rex Laudiangco yesterday said they are targeting to finish the public biddings for BSKE supplies and paraphernalia in September to give them ample time to deploy them.

“All procurements are already ongoing through competitive public bidding. We expect to complete everything by September,” said Laudiangco, adding: “We expect that these will be delivered to us come October, so that we can deploy them by November.”

Laudiangco said the procurement includes ballpens, ballot secrecy folders, indelible inks, and thumbprint takers, among others.

Similar procurement, he added, are being held for anti-coronavirus disease (COVID-19) supplies, like temperature takers, thermal scanners, and alcohol.

On the other hand, the poll official said they are not looking for additional ballot boxes to be used in the December 5 polls because “we will just recycle those that we have. We already did the inventory. We saw that the number of ballot boxes will be sufficient.”

On Sunday, the Comelec said it is looking to begin printing the official ballots by the middle of September.

Laudiangco said the Comelec is continuing its preparations for the BSKE despite the possibilities of the barangay and youth polls being postponed.

“Unless there is already a signed law postponing the elections, we need to continue our preparations so that it will be ‘all systems go’ come December 5,” he said.

In the event that the BSKE is postponed, he said the procured supplies will not be wasted because these can used “whenever the elections will be rescheduled.”

Several bills have been filed in both the Senate and the House of Representatives proposing the postponement of the December 5 barangay and youth polls.
