ONE of the Navy’s patrol ships, BRP Gregorio del Pilar, has passed sea trials, paving the way for its return to operational status after undergoing repair due to damage it sustained in an accident about three years ago.

The ship, also known as Patrol Ship 15, announced the breakthrough recently on its Facebook page. The ship is under the command of Cdr. Clyde Domingo,

“It was a big day for us at #TmGoyo (Team Goyo) as we successfully completed our series of sea trials,” the Facebook message read.

“Goyo” is the nickname of Filipino revolutionary hero Gregorio del Pilar.

PS15 is a former US Coast Guard cutter that was donated by the US government in 2011. Its sister ship, BRP Ramon Alcaraz, was transferred by the Americans to the Philippine Navy the following year.

The two ships have been performing varied missions, including patrols at the disputed West Philippine Sea in the South China Sea, since they were commissioned by the Philippine Navy.

BRP Gregorio Del Pilar ran aground at the Hasa-hasa Shoal or Half Moon Shoal in the West Philippine Sea in August 2018 during a routine patrol. After its repair, it underwent sea trials to check its seaworthiness. Reports on social media claimed the ship caught fire during a sea trial in Subic on Monday last week.
