THE “Brigada Eskwela 2022” program of the Department of Education starts today, Monday, as part of its preparations to ensure the readiness of schools for the opening of school year 2022-2023 on Aug. 22.

The program, according to the DepEd, will kick off at the Imus Pilot Elementary School in Imus City, Cavite.

“Under the theme “Brigada Eskwela: Tugon sa Hamon ng Ligtas na Balik-Aral” the Brigada Eskwela, which will be held from August 1 to 26, 2022, is in preparation for the opening of classes which will also strengthen the relationship between DepEd and other stakeholders to ensure the delivery of quality education to all learners,” the DepEd said in an advisory.

The launch of the event will be livestreamed in the DepEd official Facebook page, website, and YouTube channel.

The Brigada Eskwela program does not accept cash donations and instead solicits cleaning and repair materials, other non-cash assistance and community volunteers who paint classrooms, repair chairs and tables, leaking roofs and faucets, cement walkways, spruce up the gardens and surrounding areas in preparation for the opening of classes.

The advisory did not say whether Vice President and concurrent Education Secretary Sara Duterte will grace the event.

The DepEd earlier announced the opening of classes on Aug. 22, with in-person classes set to resume in November after more than two years of blended learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program was launched in 2003 as part of the DepEd’s Adopt-A-School program.

During its first year of implementation, participation rate stood at a dismal 31 percent.

Since it was made an institutional event in 2008, participation rate jumped to 100 percent.
