INTERIOR Secretary Eduardo Año yesterday ordered the relief of the Bureau of Fire Protection director in Western Visayas whose female staff roamed Boracay Island pending the result of her COVID-19 test, which later came positive.

Año designated Senior Supt. Jerry Candido, the outgoing BFP director for logistics, as the officer-in-charge of BFP-Western Visayas, replacing the sacked officer, Senior Supt. Roderick Aguto.

“We will never tolerate any wrongdoing by our BFP personnel or any other DILG personnel for that matter because lives are at stake here. We are in a pandemic and we cannot tolerate excuses,” said Año.

“Moreover, as law enforcers, we must set a good example to our people and the breach of quarantine protocols sets a very bad example,” Año said in ordering the relief of Aguto.

On Tuesday, officials confirmed that a female staff of the BFP-Western Visayas stayed at the newly-opened Boracay Island from June 12 to 14. Earlier reports said she was subjected to a COVID-19 test in Cebu City on June 9 and was supposed to undergo 14-day quarantine.

But she went to Boracay pending the result of the test supposedly for a “conference,” apparently referring to a meeting of Cabinet officials from June 11 to 12.

DILG Undersecretary and spokesman Jonathan Malaya said Año directed BFP chief Director Jose Embang to conduct a further investigation of the incident.
