BBM ‘capitalized’ on 40-year labor export program — Migrante

PRESIDENT Marcos Jr. cashed in on the deployment of Filipino workers to other countries, which his late father institutionalized, during the first year of his administration, Migrante International yesterday said.

“Instead of addressing the pressing problems of Filipinos on his first year, Marcos Jr. capitalized on our suffering to expand and speed up the overseas deployment of Filipinos,” said Migrante in a statement.

“He intensified the 40-year labor export program instituted by his dictator father,” it added.

The organization of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) pointed at how the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has become the government’s migrant workers’ marketing arm.

“It has been actively entering into memoranda of agreement with countries that want to employ OFWs. Clearly, the creation of the DMW was meant to intensify the government’s labor export industry,” said Migrante.

The group also slammed the government as it lamented that while OFW remittances have reached P802 billion, only 2 percent of the amount has been allotted by the DMW for migrant workers protection.
