POLICE arrested yesterday a leader of the leftist group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan or Bayan in Panay Island during a law enforcement operation in Cabatuan town in Iloilo for murder and attempted murder.

Reports reaching the PNP national headquarters in Camp Crame in Quezon City identified the suspect as Elmer Forro Sr., 52, the secretary general of Bayan in Panay Island.

Police said Forro was nabbed by operatives of the Western Visayas regional police office in Sitio Bangko, Barangay Lutac in Cabatuan town at around 4:10 a.m. on the strength of arrest warrants issued by Iloilo Judge Gemalyn Faunillo-Tarol.

Security officials have tagged Bayan as among the many front organizations of the Communist Party of the Philippines and New People’s Army. The NPA marked its 53rd foundation anniversary yesterday.

After the arrest of Forro, PNP chief Dionardo Carlos vowed the police force will continue to account for wanted members of the NPA and its affiliate organizations.

Carlos also took a swipe at the NPA during its anniversary.

“The CPP-NPA continues to wallow in irrelevance on the 53rd year of its campaign of terror and violence that has only made life more miserable for poor people in the countryside,” Carlos said.
