THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority will start implementing today, Monday, the ban against e-bikes, e-trikes, pushcarts, pedicabs, kuliglig and other light electric vehicles on major roads in the metropolis.
The agency said such vehicles will not be allowed on Recto Ave., Quirino Ave., Araneta Ave., Epifanio delos Santos Ave., Katipunan/C.P. Garcia Ave., Southeast Metro Manila Expressway, Roxas Boulevard, Taft Ave., Osmeña Highway or South Super Highway, Shaw Boulevard, Ortigas Avenue, Magsaysay Boulevard/Aurora Boulevard, Quezon Ave./Commonwealth Ave., A. Bonifacio Ave., Rizal Ave., Delpan Street/Marcos Highway/McArthur Highway, Elliptical Road, Mindanao Ave, Marcos Highway, Boni Avenue, and España Boulevard.
MMDA Chairperson Romando Artes said a fine of P2,500 will be slapped on violators of the ban.
“If the vehicle is not registered and its driver fails to present a license, the unit will be confiscated and impounded,” Artes said.
Artes earlier clarified the MMDA is not against the use of e-bikes and e-trikes and said the prohibition is a means to regulate their use to prevent accidents.
“We are not discouraging their use but we are just regulating,” Artes said last month.
Data presented by Artes showed that accidents involving e-bikes have tripled since 2019.
That year, only 309 recorded accidents involved e-bikes, resulting in 112 non-fatal injuries and 197 damage to property.
By 2020, the number increased to 377, with one fatality, 163 injuries and 213 damage to property.
In 2021, the number of accidents slightly dipped to 346 with one fatality and 183 non-fatal injuries, while 162 resulted in damage to property.
In 2022, the MMDA recorded 539 accidents with six fatalities and 262 non-fatal injuries and 271 resulting in damage to property.
Last year, the number further increased to 907, with four fatalities, 435 non-fatal injuries and another 467 resulting in damage to property.
