GOVERNMENT prosecutors have indicted the doctor who shot and killed former Lamitan City, Basilan mayor Rosita Furigay and two others inside the Ateneo de Manila University campus in Quezon City last Sunday.
The Quezon City Prosecutors Office filed murder and other cases before the Quezon City Regional Trial Court on Wednesday after finding probably cause to charge Dr. Chao Tiao Yumol, who is under police custody.
It recommended no bail for the three counts of murder lodged against Yumol, no bail for carnapping, P200,000 bail for frustrated murder, and P60,000 bail for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and P3,000 bail for malicious mischief.
The cases were endorsed by investigators from the Quezon City Police District-Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit before the Quezon City Prosecutors Office last Monday night.
Quezon City Police District director Brig. Gen. Remus Medina expressed confidence that Yumol will be convicted, saying they have a solid case against him.
“There is already a resolution (from the Quezon City Prosecutors Office),” referring to the indictment of Yumol before the Quezon City Regional Trial Court.
“It will go through a process but we do believe we have an air-tight case. We believe the case we filed will have a good result,” said Medina.
Yumol shot Furigay while the latter was about to attend the graduation of her daughter, Hanna (earlier reported by the police as Hannait), who took up law at the university. Hanna was injured in the attack.
Also killed in the attack were Furigay’s long-time executive assistant, Victor Capistrano, and Ateneo security guard Jeneven Bandiala.
Police earlier said it had a solid case against Yumol, noting that he admitted shooting the victims, the murder weapon was recovered, and witnesses have agreed to testify against him.
Investigation showed Yumol had a personal grudge against Furigay, who had filed at least 90 cyber liber cases against him.
The rift started in 2018 when Yumol opened an infirmary clinic across the Lamitan City Hall without a permit from the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARRM).
The BARRM health ministry ordered Furigay to implement a cease-and-desist order to stop the operation of the clinic.
Yumol also accused Furigay and her husband, then vice mayor and now Lamitan Mayor Roderick Furigay, of alleged corruption and involvement in illegal drugs.
