AT least 1,000 new cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) were recorded in July, about 29 percent higher than the figure for the same month last year, according to the Department of Health.
The new figures bring to 7,483 the HIV cases for the first seven months of this year, including 1,312 AIDS cases, and 460 deaths.
Since 1984 when monitoring started, 69,512 HIV cases have been reported, with 8,410 AIDS cases and 3,514 deaths.
Of the 1,111 cases last July, 18 percent (199) cases had clinical manifestations of being advanced HIV infection or acquired immunodeficiency deficiency syndrome (AIDS). There were 55 deaths.
Sexual contact remains the predominant mode of transmission (1,099 cases or 99 percent), of which 953 (86 percent) are males who have sex with males (MSM).
Male-to-male sex accounted for 699 cases followed by 254 from those having sex with both male and female, and 146 from male-to-female sex.
Other modes of transmission are needle sharing among injecting drug users, nine cases.
There were two cases of mother-to-child transmission. One case had no data on the mode of transmission.
More than a third of the cases (34 percent, 380) were from the National Capital Region followed by Calabarzon (16 percent, 180), Central Luzon (12 percent, 134), Central Visayas (8 percent, 93), and Davao Region (5 percent, 60).
Eighty-two Filipinos working overseas were diagnosed with HIV, with all them infected through sexual contact (15 male-female sex, 39 male-male sex, and 28 sex with both males and females).
