THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) yesterday warned aspiring overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) against dealing with an immigration firm based in Canada.
It said the firm, Grewal Immigration Services Ltd. based in Edmonton, “a Canada-based immigration office,” was recently involved in a case of “violation of no-fee charging policy.”
The warning comes after the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Canada informed the DMW that the firm has been recruiting Filipino workers for various positions under the guise of “immigration service.”
Ople said such activities are prohibited under the provincial and federal laws of Canada.
Migrant Workers Secretary Susan Ople said the company charges $6,000 in “professional fees,” excluding government fees and taxes.
Ople said Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Protection Act prohibits charging of recovery fees and costs from foreign workers during application and recruitment process.
The DMW said aspiring OFWs must be careful in dealing with other companies engaged “with the same method of recruitment” used by Grewal.
