A Manila court has issued a warrant of arrest against a policeman who drove a van into a crowd of protesters during a rally at the US Embassy in 2016.
Manila Metropolitan Trial Court Branch 7 Presiding Judge Carissa Anne Manook-Frondozo issued the warrant against PO3 (staff sergeant) Franklin del Prado Kho on June 26.
The court recommended a P36,000 bail “for the provisional liberty of the accused.”
It also set the arraignment of the police officer on September 2.
During a hearing conducted by the House Committee on Human Rights, Kho said he was merely protecting his life when the incident happened. He said he never had any intention to hurt the demonstrators even if they were already becoming unruly at the time.
He added that protesters shattered the window of the police patrol van he was driving.
