NATIONAL Security Adviser Eduardo Año yesterday reiterated government’s commitment to safeguard the nation from all threats amid “uncertainties” this year.
“As we stand at the threshold of 2024, I extend my heartfelt wishes for a prosperous and secure new year,” Año said in his New Year’s message.
Año, a former Armed Forces chief, also serves as director general of the National Security Council, chairman of the National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea, and vice chairman of the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict.
“In the realm of national security, our commitment remains steadfast,” he said.
“The challenges of the past year have strengthened our resolve, and as your National Security Adviser, I assure you that we are dedicated to safeguarding our beloved nation,” added Año.
Año appealed for unity in facing “uncertainties” which he did not specify.
The country is facing various challenges, from China’s increasing aggression in the West Philippine Sea to threats posed by communist and terrorist groups.
“In 2024, let us come together in the face of uncertainties. As we look ahead, I am confident that with the dedication to duty of our uniformed and security forces and the vigilance of our citizens, we will continue to build a nation that is safe, stable, and secure,” said Año.
Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr, in a New Year’s message issued last Saturday, thanked President Marcos Jr, stakeholders and the people “for the trust and confidence in our institution.”
“We call upon the same outpouring of support in the coming year so that we can help build a stable, secure, and solid Philippines,” he said.
The following day, the Armed Forces vowed to build a “more dedicated, professional, and modernized AFP equipped to meet the evolving challenges of the 21st century” as the country welcomes 2014.
The military also said it will “ensure its presence and increase efforts in its maritime security to protect our sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction in our maritime domain.”
It said it was looking forward to more joint activities with other countries “that share the commitment to peace, security, and international cooperation.”
“At the beginning of a new year, new challenges and opportunities arise, demanding the collective efforts and expertise of the AFP. However, I am confident that we will rise to the occasion and overcome whatever obstacles come our way. Therefore, let us embrace the coming year with a reinforced commitment to our mission and shared values,” AFP chief Gen. Romeo Brawner said in the statement.
