TROPICAL depression “Ambo” slightly gained strength on Monday as it headed for the Bicol region where it is expected to make landfall on Thursday.
The Caraga and Davao regions will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms due to the trough of Ambo.
As of 3 p.m Monday, Ambo, packing maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 70 kph, was some 330 km east of Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur and remained “almost stationary,” according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
Weather specialist Chris Perez said Ambo was moving slow — at 3 kph — because of a high pressure area.
Ambo is expected to be at the northern tip of the Samar provinces on Thursday morning.
On Thursday afternoon, Perez said, Ambo is projected to make landfall at the southern part of Bicol region and later cross Central Luzon. He said Ambo may intensify into a tropical depression before the landfall.
He said the trough of Ambo may bring scattered rain showers in Metro Manila starting Thursday night.
Ambo is expected to leave the landmass on Saturday and will be out of the Philippine area of responsibility on Sunday or Monday.
