ALL major political parties will be part of President Marcos Jr.’s Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas after forging an alliance with his Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), Speaker Martin Romualdez said yesterday.
The Speaker made the statement after Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert Ace Barbers said his Nacionalista Party is forging an alliance with the PFP by the end of the month.
“The Partido Federal has been very, very successful in creating alliances with the major political parties,” the Speaker told Teleradyo in an interview. “So, Lakas was its (PFP’s) first alliance partner, followed by the (Nationalist People’s Coalition), the (National Unity Party) just last weekend. I believe the NP will be following suit. So all the major political parties will be in alliance with Partido Federal of the President.”
Last May, the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) led by Romualdez, its president, formalized its alliance with the (PFP) in preparation for the 2025 midterm elections.
The “Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas (Alliance for the New Philippines)” was launched at the Manila Polo Club in Makati City and attended by the President, who chairs the PFP.
Romualdez, who is said to be eyeing the presidency, said the leaders of each party are expected to reach a consensus as to who will compose the administration’s senatorial slate.
“Pagpipilian ng leaders ng alliance or coalition (The leaders of the alliance or coalition will choose who will complete the senatorial slate),” he said.
Romualdez said he will seek re-election as representative of Leyte’s first district.
“I will go for an election in my district and if other congressmen would so desire that I remain, and if the administration finds me an acceptable leader for the majority coalition, I will do that,” he said.
Asked if he will seek higher office in the 2028 national elections, where he could run for president, the Speaker said: “Depende. Sa Diyos na lang ‘yun (It depends. I’m leaving it up to God). We have to pray for that. Ako (me), I take it one day at a time,” he said.
Barbers earlier expressed belief that his party mate, presidential sister Sen. Imee Marcos, will seek re-election under the administration’s senatorial slate in the 2025 midterm elections.
The senator has said she was not sure if she will join the administration’s senatorial in next year’s polls, or if she be included in it. She said the number of those eyeing a Senate seat can reach as high as 50, based on the senatorial slates of different political parties.
While she is a sister of the President, the senator is a staunch ally of Vice President Sara Duterte who quit the Marcos Cabinet last month.
The Vice President’s father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, has been criticizing Marcos, and had called the President a drug user and addict.
Sen. Marcos has been having differences with her brother’s allies, mainly with Romualdez, their first cousin.
