AIR Force chief Lt. Gen. Connor Anthony Canlas yesterday said President Duterte has approved the acquisition of modern multi-role fighters (MRFs) and expressed hope the procurement contract for at least 12 planes will be signed this year or next year.
The defense department earlier said about P61.2 billion has been earmarked for the project.
“The MRF acquisition was approved already by our President (President Duterte) but the selection of the model, the type is still in the pipeline,” Canlas said.
He did not say when Duterte gave the approval.
Canlas said several countries have offered to supply the much-needed MRFs which are being acquired under the ongoing modernization of the Armed Forces.
“Many proponents are offering (MRFs) to us but these will have to go through the screening process,” said Canlas.
“It’s actually a choice between the (US) F-16 and the Gripen of Sweden. But there are others who want to join though they have yet to forward any proposal. As of now it’s only the two,” he said.
Last year, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said F-16s are expensive. He said if US would not give a “favorable offer,” the government may go with the Swedish Gripen.
“What we need actually need now is multi-role (fighters) that’s fourth generation and above, at least 12 units. It should be multi-role enough to do patrolling in our protected waters and territorial airspace,” said Canlas.
The AFP modernization programs calls for the acquisition of modern equipment, including the MRFs and off-shore patrol vessels for the Philippine Navy.
