Abueva’s wife has final say on suspension

IT SEEMS Calvin Abueva’s chances of his indefinite suspension being lifted by the PBA now depends on how he is painted by the person he is closest to.

According to a very reliable source, the only thing standing in the way of Abueva’s reinstatement is the testimony of his wife, Salome, that he has indeed fulfilled all the PBA requirements and is now a changed man.

“I-de-determine kung pareho ang sasabihin nu’ng wife sa sinasabi ni Calvin,” related the team insider. “In other words, kung in-sync silang dalawa.”

Salome would be interviewed by either Commissioner Willie Marcial or the psychotherapist who conducted the psychological tests on Abueva.

The source added that it could be the reason why Abueva excused himself from participating in the Fuel Masters’ individual practices last Friday.

Marcial had previously said that Abueva would be reinstated once the Phoenix forward has completed all of the things required of him by the league, which included illegal drugs and psychological tests.

In reports that came out last week, Abueva said he has completed all his tests, a claim that Marcial disputed.

“May kaunting proseso pa na dapat gawin, pero hindi ko maisisiwalat para sa ikabubuti ng lahat at para sa proteksyon na rin ng lahat ng involved,” Marcial explained.

Marcial added that once Abueva completes all that is required of him he will be up for evaluation by the Commissioner’s Office.

“Iyon ang sandali lang matatapos,” said Marcial. “Baka isang upuan lang iyon may desisyon na.”

Phoenix coach Louie Alas said he has no idea what “process” Abueva still has to go through but insisted he remains confident Abueva would be back with the team when the PBA resumes its season.

“Kasi kung ano man ang gusto nilang ipagawa kay Calvin nagawa na niya at kung anuman iyung natitira sigurado akong gagawin pa rin niya iyon,” said Alas.

If what the source claimed is true, everything now depends on how Abueva’s current relationship with his wife is.

The couple went through some marital problems shortly after Abueva was slapped the indefinite suspension in early June of last year, a punishment meted on him following back-to-back ugly incidents in the Commissioner’s Cup.

In July of last year Salome went public and said she was physically abused by Calvin, an allegation which the player refuted.

The two kissed and made up later last year with Abueva adding their five kids helped contribute to his desire to change his tempestuous ways in and out of the basketball court.
