A SUB-LEADER of the Abu Sayyaf Group and 10 other members of the terrorist organization surrendered in Hadji Mohammad Ajul town in Basilan on Tuesday, the military reported yesterday.

Lt. Gen. Alfredo Rosario Jr., commander of the Zamboanga City-based AFP Western Mindanao Command, identified the Abu Sayyaf official who returned to the government fold as Abdullan Indanan, alias Guro.

Rosario said Indanan and his men surrendered to Brig. Gen. Domingo Gobway, commander of the military’s Joint Task Force Basilan, in Barangay Serongon.

Indanan and his men turned in a total of 11 high-powered firearms — six M16 rifles, an M1 Carbine, two M16A1 rifles, an M16 rifle with M203 attached, and a M4 rifle.

Gobway said Hadji Samad, of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front-Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities, and other MILF commanders and members helped in the surrender.

The surrender came after Abu Sayyaf leader Radzmil Jannatul, alias Khubayb, was killed in a firefight with government troops in Sumisip town in Basilan last March 25.

The Abu Sayyaf is one of the major terrorist groups based in Mindanao. The others are the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, and the Daulah Islamiyah-Maute Group.

The military has stepped up combat operations against these terrorist organizations, which are estimated to have a combined strength of around 200 to 300 men, over the past several years.

AFP chief Gen. Andres Centino commended the soldiers of the Joint Task Force Basilan and of the AFP Western Mindanao for intensifying military operations against threat groups in Basilan and in the entire western Mindanao.
