POLICE operatives arrested a member of the terrorist group Abu Sayyaf in Basilan who was allegedly involved in the kidnapping of a Filipino-American, her son and nephew 12 years ago.

The PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) named the suspect as Gerry Mapula Abing, who carries the aliases Kudri Pegging, Pegging and Abing, 31.

Abing was nabbed by operatives of the CIDG and other PNP units last Tuesday in Barangay Malo-ong San Jose in Lamitan City, Basilan, the CIDG said.

The policemen were armed with a search warrant issued by Basilan judge Verna Kate Santos for illegal possession of firearms, ammunition, and explosives.

Seized from Abing’s possession were a cal. 45 pistol, a magazine for cal. 45 pistol, six bullets for a cal. 45 pistol, a hand grenade, and a tactical sling bag.

Abing was associated with Abu Sayyaf leader Furuji Indama, who died in a military operation in RT Lim town in Zamboanga Sibugay in September 2020.

Police said Abing is included in the AFP-PNP’s list of wanted Abu Sayyaf members.

The CIDG said Abing took part in the kidnapping of Filipino-American Gerfa Yeatts Lunsman, who was snatched along with her son Kevin Eric and nephew Romnick Jackaria in Zamboanga City in July 2011.
