GOVERNMENT troops yesterday seized the lair of an Abu Sayyaf sub-leader tagged behind the August 24 twin suicide bombings in Sulu, which left 17 people dead, including two female suicide bombers, and scores injured.

The lair was found by forces of the elite 5th Scout Ranger Battalion in Indanan, Sulu at around 9 a.m. during a pursuit operation, said Lt. Col. Ronaldo Mateo, spokesman of the military’s Joint Task Force Sulu. No firefight took place as the group of Abu Sayyaf sub-leader Mundi Sawadjaan left the site earlier, apparently after sensing the arrival of the operating troops.

Mateo said Sawadjaan and about 40 of his men occupied the temporary camp for at least three days, based on personal belongings and food found in the lair.

Mateo said pursuit operations would continue, using “all land, sea, and air assets of the Joint Task Force.”
