A MEMBER of the bandit group Abu Sayyaf was killed while a female group member was injured and subsequently captured in a firefight with government troops in Talipao town in Sulu, a military official reported yesterday.

Capt. Arvin Encinas, spokesman of the AFP’s Western Mindanao Command based in Zamboanga City, said the clash also led to the recovery of high-powered firearms.

Encinas said troops from the Army’s 2nd Special Forces Battalion caught up with about 30 Abu Sayyaf members in Sitio Kan Pataw, Barangay Upper Sinuman around 3:40 p.m. on Sunday during a tactical offensive.

Encinas said soldiers launched the operation after receiving information from residents about the presence of the Abu Sayyaf men in their community.

The two sides traded fires for about 20 minutes, after which the bandits withdrew, leaving behind their slain comrade, who has yet to be identified. Nursaina Jarad Sahi, the wife of another Abu Sayyaf member, was wounded and later captured.

Also recovered at the scene were an M16 rifle and a Galil rifle, both with M203 grenade launchers.

Sahi sustained shrapnel wounds and received immediate treatment at a military hospital in Jolo, Sulu.

“It is unfortunate that Abu Sayyaf terrorists continue to endanger the lives of their own family and friends, like Ms. Nursaina. I feel sorry for her that she was abandoned, wounded and helpless during the firefight,” said Joint Task Force Sulu chief Maj. Gen. Corleto Vinluan.

Wesmincom Lt. Gen. Cirilito Sobejana reiterated his appeal to the Abu Sayyaf members to surrender.
