ALMOST nine in 10 residents of 29 barangays in Ormoc City have voted to reorganize their communities, based on the plebiscite held by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) during the weekend.
In a statement, the Comelec said it was an overwhelming approval to ratify the proposal to reorganize and rename the 29 barangays of Ormoc City.
“With a clear collective vote of 89.34% for ‘yes’ and just 10.08% for ‘no,’ thousands of Ormocanons resoundingly voted to ratify Ormoc City Ordinance No. 052 (Series of 2021 dated January 19, 2021),” said Comelec spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco.
Under the city ordinance, Barangay District Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, 13, 15, 17, 23, and 27 shall now be known collectively as the new Barangay South, while Barangay District Nos. 9, 10, 11, 16, 18, 25, and 28 shall now be known collectively as the new Barangay East.
It also provides that Barangay District Nos. 14, 19, 20, 21, 22, 24, and 26 shall now be known collectively as the new Barangay West, while Barangay District No. 29 shall now be known as the new Barangay North.
“With this reverberating decision, the City Government of Ormoc hopes and intends to bring barangay governance more efficiently and effectively to the people, ensure the delivery of basic services, and usher the whole of government closer to the Ormocanons,” said Laudiangco.
