8,167 new cases; toll up to 28,093

FOR the fourth straight day, over 8,000 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases were reported by the Department of Health while 77 more succumbed to the deadly virus as the toll moved closer to the grim milestone of 30,000.

In its latest bulletin, the DOH said the total number of infections in the country rose to 1,605,762, counting the 8,167 new cases reported yesterday that went with the 8,735 new cases last Sunday, 8,147 last Saturday, and 8,562 last Friday.

One laboratory was not operational while three others failed to submit data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System (CDRS) last July 31.

The DOH said the toll climbed to 28,093 for a case fatality rate of 1.75.

Active cases dipped slightly to 62,615 from 63,646 last Sunday, with 93.9 percent mild cases, 2.1 percent severe cases, 1.4 percent moderate cases, 1.3 percent asymptomatic cases, and 1.2 percent critical cases.

The DOH reported 9,095 more recoveries, raising the number of survivors to 1,515,054.

This means that 94.4 percent of COVID patients have recovered.

The Department of Foreign Affairs reported that 503 overseas Filipinos were infected with the deadly COVID-19 virus the previous week.

This brought to 21,641 the total number of Filipinos in 98 countries who have contracted the virus since last year.

Of the total cases, 12,317 were in the Middle East and Africa, 4,744 in the Asia-Pacific region, 3,566 in Europe, and 1,014 in the Americas.

The DFA also reported 56 new fatalities, raising the death toll to 1,322, with 901 in the Middle East and Africa, 246 in the Americas, 130 in the Europe, and 45 in the Asia-Pacific region.

The number of recoveries also rose to 12,531 with 71 new recoveries. — With Ashzel Hachero
