EIGHT minors were injured when a grenade they found and toyed with exploded in Baybay City in Leyte on Tuesday, police reported yesterday.
Police said the eight — five boys and three girls aged eight to 12 — found a 40 mm cartridge at an abandoned videoke house in Sitio Tinago, Barangay Candadam last Tuesday afternoon. 40 mm cartridges are fired from M203 grenade launchers.
“Alias John then played with the said cartridge long with the other victims by throwing it until it exploded,” the Eastern Visayas regional police said in a statement.
The victims were brought to the Immaculada Conception Hospital for treatment.
Eastern Visayas Regional Police Director Brig. Gen. Rommel Bernardo Cabagnot urged the public to be vigilant and report to authorities if they find similar explosives.
“I am calling the attention of the public to report to proper authorities when you found or encounter the same,” said Cabagnot.
