A JAIL guard was killed by eight inmates, including an Abu Sayyaf member, who bolted the Basilan provincial jail in Isabela City on Tuesday afternoon, police reported yesterday.
Capt. Edwin Duco, spokesman of the Zamboanga Peninsula Regional Police, said one of the escapees, identified as Torotoy Abbas who is facing charges for kidnapping with serious illegal detention, died in a later manhunt operation.
Duco said Abbas and the seven others escaped from the provincial jail at around 6 p.m. Tuesday through the ceiling.
Jail Officer 3 Asbi Florencio Salih, 48, tried to prevent the inmates from escaping but he was overpowered and shot dead with his own service firearm. The inmates escaped with an M14 rifle and a cal. 45 pistol.
The seven other escapees were Majad Hassan, said to be an Abu Sayyaf member facing a murder case; Battuh Kusain (murder and frustrated murder); Gappal Saripada (murder and frustrated murder); Hernie Asao (illegal possession of explosives and firearms); Nurhasan Lahaman (two counts of murder); Albaser Ahmad (murder and frustrated murder); and Kaliji Hajirul (murder).
Duco said the inmates fled towards Barangay Sumagdang where they stole two motorcycles.
