SEVENTY-SIX elementary students in Sablayan, Oriental Mindoro were brought to the hospital yesterday after experiencing vomiting and dehydration due to suspected food poisoning.

Sablayan Municipal Health Officer Dr. Meldie Soriano said the students from the San Francisco Elementary School were brought to the San Sebastian District Hospital.

Soriano said of the 76 students who were brought to the hospital for vomiting, 23 were confined. None of the students are in severe condition, Soriano also said.Aside from the students, six teachers also experienced vomiting.

Soriano said the students and teachers ate “lumpia” or spring rolls with bean sprouts and squash and “galunggong” or blue mackerel scad.

“We will investigate the food handling,” Soriano said, adding barangay health workers prepared the food on Sunday evening, stored in the refrigerator, and cooked early morning yesterday.

She said some 200 spring rolls were prepared and cooked.

Sought for comment, Department of Education spokesperson Michael Tan Poa said they are still getting the details from their division office in Oriental Mindoro.
