SEVEN of 10 Filipinos are “worried” about the increasing number of Chinese workers in the country, with about half of the population expressing concern that the presence of the foreigners is a “threat to the country’s overall security,” the third quarter survey of the Social Weather Stations showed.
The survey conducted from September 27 to 30 also showed that only 31 percent (12 percent very many, 19 percent somewhat many) of the respondents believe “many foreign Chinese are working in the locality” while 25 percent said there are only “a few” Chinese working in their area and 44 percent said there is “almost none”
Despite this, SWS said it found that 70 percent of the Filipinos are “worried” about the increasing number of Chinese workers in the country (31 percent “worried a great deal” and 39 percent “somewhat worried”) while 30 percent are “not worried” and 19 percent are “not too worried.”
The SWS also found that 52 percent (27 percent strongly agreed, 25 percent somewhat agreed) agreed with the statement that the “increasing number of foreign Chinese working here is a threat to the country’s overall security” while 27 percent (13 percent strongly disagree, 14 percent somewhat disagree) disagree, and 21 percent were undecided.
The results also showed that more people from Metro Manila are worried about the increasing presence of Chinese workers (76 percent worried, 25 percent not worried) followed by those from the Visayas (71 percent worried, 29 percent not worried), Luzon (69 percent worried, 31 percent not worried), and Mindanao (68 percent worried, 33 percent not worried.)
The SWS also found that more people from Metro Manila agree with the statement that the presence of Chinese workers are a threat to the country’s security or +38 (59 percent agree, 22 percent disagree), followed by those from Luzon with +27 (53 percent agree, 26 percent disagree), Mindanao with +21 (51 percent agree, 30 percent disagree), and Visayas (45 percent agree, 30 percent disagree).
