NEW coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases surged to 6,637 yesterday from 5,414 last Wednesday while 155 more patients succumbed to the deadly virus, according to the Department of Health.
In its latest bulletin, the DOH said the latest cases do not include figures from five laboratories that failed to submit data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System (CDRS) last June 15.
The death toll rose to 23,276 for a case fatality rate of 1.74 while the number of infections in the country climbed to 1,339,457.
Active cases jumped to 58,407 from 56,170 last Wednesday, with 91.8 percent mild cases, 3.8 percent asymptomatic cases, 1.8 percent severe cases, 1.3 percent critical cases, and 1.3 percent moderate cases.
The number of survivors rose to 1,257,774 after 4,585 more recovered. The DOH said this means that 93.9 percent of COVID patients have recovered.
Four more Filipinos abroad have contracted the deadly virus, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs, bringing the total number to 20,280.
The Middle East and African regions remained the place with the highest number of cases and deaths among members of the overseas Filipino community with 11,531 and 812 respectively.
The Americas has the least number of cases with 986 but the second highest death toll with 244.
The DFA reported no new fatality. The current fatality count among overseas Filipinos stands at 1, 219.
There were seven new recoveries, bringing the total number of survivors to 12,092.
Meanwhile, Australian Ambassador Steven Robinson said Canberra will donate P480.2 million to the Philippines for the purchase of COVID-19 vaccines.
“I have informed Secretaries @teddyboylocsin @SecDuque Galvez & Dizon of Australia’s additional commitment of AUD13.72M (PHP480.2M) to buy #COVID19 vaccine for the Philippines. This will make an important contribution to meeting the country’s vaccine needs in 2021,” Robinson said in a tweet. — With Ashzel Hachero
