6,539 new cases, 71 more die

NEW coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases dipped to 6,539 yesterday from an average of 7,212 in the past four days only because seven laboratories failed to submit their data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System (CDRS) last June 5 while 71 more patients succumbed to the deadly virus.

In its latest bulletin, the Department of Health said total infections in the country rose to 1,276,004 while the death toll jumped to 21,969, just 31 short of 22K, for a case fatality rate of 1.72.

Active cases slightly dipped to 58,854 from 59,337 last Sunday, with 93.4 percent mild cases, 2.4 percent asymptomatic cases, 1.7 percent severe cases, 1.3 percent critical cases, and 1.1 percent moderate cases.

There were 6,969 more recoveries, raising the number of survivors to 1,195,181.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said the number of overseas Filipinos who had contracted the deadly virus climbed to 19,885 after seven new cases were reported.

Of these, 11,357 were in the Middle East and African regions, 4, 022 in the Asia Pacific region, 3,522 in Europe and 984 in the Americas.

The DFA reported no new recoveries and deaths Monday. As of June 6, DFA data showed 12,056 recoveries and 1,194 fatalities.

Meanwhile, four of the 303 Badjaos who travelled from Zamboanga to Manila and were intercepted by authorities on June 4 at the Manila North Harbor tested positive for the virus in testing held last Friday.

Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking administrative officer Nadine Bernardino said a commercial ship is set to bring 250 of the Badjaos home to Zamboanga yesterday afternoon, 32 will temporarily stay at the National Housing Authority facility in Quezon City, while 21 others will stay for health reasons.

A police officer from the Cagayan de Oro City police station has died of COVID-19, bringing to 69 the victims of the deadly virus in the police force.

PNP chief Guillermo Eleazar said the 49-year-old officer died last Saturday and extended the PNP’s heartfelt condolences to the family and colleagues of the fatality.

“I am reminding again all our police personnel to be cautious on your health conditions and do not self-medicate as it may get worse,” Eleazar said.

Police said the officer experienced shortness in breathing and was immediately brought to a hospital by his colleagues last May 30. He was intubated due to pneumonia, subjected to a swab test, and taken to an isolation facility.

The following day, his test showed he was positive for COVID-19.

His condition improved on June 3 but deteriorated anew the following day. He was pronounced dead on June 5.

The PNP Health Service announced 199 new COVID infections among police personnel, bringing to 24,950 the number of PNP personnel who have contracted the virus, with 23,069 having recovered and 1,812 still active cases. — With Ashzel Hachero and Victor Reyes
