SIX people were injured and some 1,048 houses were damaged by a flash flood that hit Banaue town in Ifugao on Thursday last week, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said yesterday.
During the “Laging Handa” public briefing, NDRRMC spokesman Mark Timbal said the calamity also affected some 1,054 families but only seven of them were displaced.
The flooding, caused by continuous heavy rains, affected 10 barangays, he said.
Timbal said the flood has subsided and the displaced individuals have returned to their homes.
“We have no fatality in the flash flood that occurred but we received reports that six of our countrymen were injured as a consequence of the flooding,” said Timbal.
Timbal said the flooding caused some P16.6 million in damage to agriculture.
Damage to infrastructure was placed at P860,000.
He said all roads are already passable, except for one which is still subject to clearing operations. He expressed confidence the road will be soon cleared of debris.
Timbal said the Banaue town has already declared a state of calamity to better address the situation.
He said the Department of Social Welfare and Development has distributed P2.4 million worth of food packs and relief items to the affected residents.
“These were immediately given, especially the family food packs, by the DSWD because these prepositioned in the warehouses in Cordillera (Administrative Region),” said Timbal. — With Jed Macapagal
