THE Bureau of Immigration yesterday said it has beefed up its workforce with 59 new immigration officers (IO) who recently graduated from its immigration academy in Pampanga.

Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco said the new IOs are composed of 36 females and 23 males who took their oath last June 3.

Tansingco said the 59 underwent a fast-tracked course that aims to equip them with necessary knowledge and skills to become effective immigration officers who will serve as frontliners in the country’s international airports.

“Thirty-seven out of the 59 new IOs will be deployed at NAIA. This will further add up the reserve immigration personnel assigned in Terminals 1 and 3, and ensure the public of our continued effort to make it more convenient for international travelers,” the BI chief added.

Tansingco said the new batch of IOs will also complement the existing manpower in different airports in Clark, Kalibo Aklan, Cebu and Zamboanga.

The BI has more than 2, 000 IOs deployed in the country’s international airports, with more than 700 alone fielded at NAIA, the country’s premiere gateway.
