FIFTY-TWO of 75 Filipino workers rescued in Laos have been repatriated, according to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).
The 75 are human trafficking victims who had been promised work in Laos by illegal recruiters. They requested to be repatriated, said Migrant Workers Undersecretary Bernard Olalia.
“They were given offers to work as customer service relations officers in Laos. After which, they became victims of a syndicate,” said Olalia.
“When they were given a different job, they realized that they are victims of human trafficking so they sought to be rescued,” he added.
Olalia also said government gave the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) psychosocial, medical, financial and other forms of assistance as soon as they arrived in Manila.
The OFWs were also provided legal assistance to help them hold accountable those behind their illegal recruitment, Olalia said.
Olalia said the DMW will also help the OFWs find overseas job orders.
