500K displaced by ‘Odette’ remain in evacuation centers

MORE than half a million Filipinos from six regions affected by typhoon “Odette” in mid-December are still staying in evacuation centers or with relatives, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said yesterday.

The DSWD-Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center said that as of 6 a.m. yesterday, 141,330 families or 515,464 persons are still displaced in Regions IV-B (Mimaropa), VI (Western Visayas), VII (Central Visayas), VIII (Eastern Visayas), X (Northern Mindanao), and XIII (Caraga) with 82,867 families (325,462 persons) staying in 1,387 evacuation centers, and 58,463 families (190,002 persons) temporarily staying with their relatives or friends.

Aid worth about P348.082 million has been provided to the affected families. Of the total, P282.64 million came from the DSWD, P61.64 million from local government units in the typhoon path, P3.78million from non-government organizations, and P12,500 from other partners.

DSWD, in its social media account, said that as of January 3, it has distributed P23.268 million worth of aide like family food packs and non-food relief items such as hygiene kits, sleeping kits, and modular tents to Surigao del Norte, P13.139 million to Dinagat island, P33.945 million to Bohol, P18.064 million to Palawan, P25.69 million to Cebu, P4.796 million to Leyte, P34.45 million to Southern Leyte, P17.92 million to Negros Oriental, and P19.91 million to Negros Occidental.

The DSWD said it still has P1.59 billion in standby funds and stockpiles and food and non-food relief items.
