THE Department of Social Welfare and Development and other government agencies evacuated 50 families that remain inside the 6-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) of the restive Mayon Volcano in Albay.
The DSWD said its Field Office V’s Disaster Response Management Division conducted an inspection in the PDZ set by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology (Phivolcs) after it received reports that residents are still staying in their homes in Barangay Anoling in Camalig town.
“The 50 families from Barangay Anoling will be given temporary shelter at the Baligang Elementary School. Validation is still ongoing to account the exact number of families,” said Director Norman Laurio, DSWD Bicol region director.
The DSWD Bicol regional office said Barangay Anoling is one of the geographically-isolated areas in Camalig town due to its distance from the town proper.
Mayon volcano continues to be restive as it still emits lava.
In a bulletin, Phivolcs said the volcano had a “very slow effusion of lava” from its summit crater, which continues to feed lava flows and debris on the Mi-isi (south) and Bonga (southeastern) gullies.
Rockfalls were also experienced at the Basud (eastern) gullies.
Mayon Volcano remains under Alert level 3 which means it is in a relatively high level of unrest and hazardous eruption may occur within weeks or even days, thus the need to stay away from the 6-kilometer PDZ.
Phivolcs said it registered 26 volcanic earthquakes and 303 rockfall events during the latest monitoring period of 5 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Sunday.
The volcano also emitted 1,145 tons of sulfur dioxide on Saturday, as it generated a 1,000-meter-tall plume which drifted southwest and west-southwest.
Mayon edifice remains inflated.
