FIVE Vietnamese have been arrested by the Makati police for qualified theft and cybercrime.

A report by the Southern Police District said the five, working as staff members of a financial service company on Paseo de Roxas, Ayala, Makati City, were apprehended last July 30 for violating Article 310 of the Revised Penal Code (Qualified Theft) in relation to Republic Act 10175 or the Cybercrime Act of 2012).

The arrest stemmed from a complaint filed by the company’s executive assistant against the five that the SPD identified by their aliases “Vong,” Su, “Nguyen, “Chong, and “Lam.”

The SPD said an initial investigation conducted by the Makati police revealed the suspects were discovered making unauthorized cryptocurrency transfers amounting to $45,000 from the company’s Imtoken E-wallet to another account they had created.

“The company confirmed the illegal transaction, leading to the immediate arrest of the suspects and recovery of the online transaction receipt,” the SPD report said.

It added the suspects had access to the company’s online account as financial staff, and the stolen e-money was intended for the company’s operational funds.

The suspects are currently under the custody of the Makati City police.
