IMMIGRATION officers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport intercepted five Filipina victims of human traffickers before they could leave the country for Bangkok, Thailand in the guise of being government workers.

Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco said the five were stopped at the NAIA Terminal 3 by personnel of the immigration protection and border enforcement section before they could board a Cebu Pacific flight to Bangkok last Oct.24.

Tansingco said the five presented dubious travel papers from government agencies where they are purportedly employed.

“They, however, admitted during questioning that they are unemployed and that the travel authority certificates and other documents they presented are spurious and were only given to them by their handlers,” the BI chief said, adding the name of the alleged handler was submitted to the Department of Justice-led Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) for investigation and filing of appropriate charges.

At least two admitted during questioning by immigration officers that they each gave their recruiter more than P30,000 to facilitate their travel abroad.

Tansingco said the five were promised high-paying jobs as teachers in Thailand.

Last Oct.10, a female trafficking victim was also intercepted at NAIA by immigration officers after she presented a document bearing the fake signature of Justice Undersecretary Nicholas Felix Ty.

The victim initially claimed to be a DOJ employee working as an administrative staff of Ty and that she is traveling to Singapore as a delegate for an official travel of the department.
