THE PNP yesterday said investigators have identified five “persons of interest” in the attempted murder of a tabloid photographer in Quezon City last Thursday.

Citing information from Quezon City Police District Director Brig. Gen. Nicolas Torre III, PNP spokeswoman Col. Jean Fajardo said the five are the subject of follow-up operations.

“They (police operatives) are hot on the trail of these five persons of interest,” Fajardo told a press briefing at Camp Crame.

“They are (the) subject of follow-up (operations) but I cannot give more details so as not to compromise and preempt the ongoing follow-up,” said Fajardo.

CCTV footage showed one of the suspects alighting from a Toyota car and later firing at the sports utility vehicle of Abiad.

Abiad and three other relatives were injured in the attack. One of the injured, a four-year nephew of Abiad, died last Saturday.

Torre said their investigation showed three others were probably involved in the shooting — the occupant of the Toyota car and two lookouts aboard two motorcycles.

“We have persons of interest, yes, but they are subject to investigation, of course,” said Torre.

Fajardo said the shooting incident might have involved a “professional group” of killers, the reason why they are careful in releasing information on the case.

“We don’t want to preempt (the investigation) but they already have the lead and hopefully, according to him (Torre), they are confident they will get the suspects within the week,” said Fajardo.
