FIVE persons were injured due to the magnitude 6.3 quake that struck Cagayan on Tuesday night, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said yesterday.
In a media bulletin, the OCD said the five sustained injuries due to a collapsed wall in Calayan town. The OCD said two of the victims sustained “brain trauma” and head concussion. It said the injuries of the three other victims were “minor.”
“No families/persons are currently being catered inside or outside evacuation centers,” the OCD also said.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said it has recorded 99 aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from 1.5 to 3.7, as of 8 a.m. yesterday.
It said no major damage to infrastructure has been reported as of yesterday morning.
Phivolcs officer-in-charge Teresito Bacolcol said the agency received reports on houses in Barangays Centro II and Cabudadan in Dalupiri Island in Calayan that sustained cracks on walls. He did not give figures.
The quake occurred at 8:13 p.m. Its epicenter was some 19 km north west of Dalupiri Island, Phivolcs said. It is tectonic in origin and had a depth of 31 km.
The shaking was felt at Intensity VI in Calayan, Cagayan and at Intensity V in Luna in Apayao; Laoag City, Bacarra, Bangui, Burgos, Dumalneg, Pagudpud, Paoay, Pasuquin, San Nicolas, and Vintar in Ilocos Norte; Aparri, Baggao, Camalaniugan, Claveria, Pamplona, Sanchez-Mira, Santa Ana, and Santa Praxedes in Cagayan.
Flora, and Santa Marcela in Apayao; Batac City, Banna, Carasi, Currimao, Dingras, Marcos, Pinili, Sarrat, and Solsona in Ilocos Norte; Sinait in Ilocos Sur; and Tuguegarao City, Abulug, Allacapan, Ballesteros, Buguey, Enrile, Gonzaga, Iguig, Lasam, Peñablanca in Cagayan felt it at Intensity IV.
The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) yesterday said concerned government agencies along with the local government units (LGUs) are assessing areas hit by the earthquake to determine, among others, the needs of the affected communities. — With Jocelyn Montemayor
