5.1 quakes hit Davao de Oro, Eastern Samar

TWO magnitude 5.1 earthquakes rocked Davao de Oro and Eastern Samar yesterday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

The quake in Davao de Oro occurred at 11:33 a.m. Its epicenter was about a kilometer southeast of New Bataan town. It was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 8 km, Phivolcs said.

The shaking was felt at Intensity V in Pantukan, Mabini, and Maco towns in Davao de Oro; Intensity IV in Tagum City, also in Davao de Oro; and Bislig City in Surigao del Sur.

The Eastern Samar quake occurred at 12:20 a.m. Its epicenter was some 53 km southeast of Dolores town. It was also tectonic in origin and had a depth of 25 km.

An instrumental Intensity III shaking was recorded in Can-Avid town in Eastern Samar and Dulag town in Leyte, said Phivolcs.
