CLOSE to 2,000 new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases were reported by the Department of Health (DOH) yesterday as the total number of infections in the country inched closer to the 500,000 mark, along with 40 more deaths.
In its latest bulletin, the DOH said of the 1,912 new cases, 136 came from Davao City while Quezon City had 107, Agusan del Sur 61, Dagupan City 57, and Cavite 54.
Overall, the total number of cases in the country rose to 494,605 while the number of fatalities now stands at of 9,739 for a case fatality rate of 1.97 percent. Fourteen of the deaths were earlier reported as recoveries.
Seven testing laboratories failed to submit data as of yesterday and were not included in the latest figures, the DOH said.
There were 746 more recoveries, meaning the number of survivors now stands at 459,252 but there are still 25,614 active cases.
Of the active cases, 85 percent are mild cases, 6.4 percent are asymptomatic cases, 5.2 percent are critical cases, 2.9 percent are severe cases, and 0.48 percent are moderate cases.
The number of overseas Filipinos infected with the deadly virus continued to climb with 120 new cases yesterday, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.
This brings to 13,498 the number of Filipinos who have contracted the virus, majority of them in the Middle East and African regions.
On Wednesday, the DFA reported 322 new cases among overseas Filipinos.
The current death toll among overseas Filipinos due to the virus is 935.
Taguig City Mayor Lino Cayetano said two more COVID patients in the city have succumbed to the virus, bringing the total number of deaths to 175 on Wednesday.
As of yesterday, Taguig had 10,933 confirmed cases with 10,652 recoveries and 176 deaths.
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration said it will begin decongesting quarantine facilities for overseas Filipino workers since many of them have finished the required 14-day quarantine. — With Ashzel Hachero and Noel Talacay
