THE National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on Tuesday urged local government units (LGUs) and the public to be on alert for floods and landslides that may be caused by tropical depression “Ambo.”
NDRRMC executive director Ricardo Jalad said floods may occur in low-lying areas in Bicol, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, and Central Luzon regions, the National Capital Region, and the provinces of Samar and Leyte.
Ambo is forecast to intensify into a tropical storm before making landfall in the southern part of Bicol on Thursday.
As of 3 p.m. Tuesday, Ambo was some 410 km east of Surigao City, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.
It had maximum sustained winds of 55 kph and gustiness of up to 70 kph and was “moving north northwest slowly,” PAGASA said.
Mindanao and the Eastern Visayas will have cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and and thunderstorms due to the trough or extension of Ambo.
Jalad advised fisherfolk and those with small seacraft against venturing to the eastern seaboards of Eastern Visayas, Caraga, Davao Oriental, and Davao Occidental.
Jalad also said the Department of Social Welfare and Development has put on standby P1.2 billion worth of resources for relief operations. The resources include some 400,000 food packs worth P179 million for distribution to families that will be affected.
Jalad said the resources “shall be augmented when the need arises.”
